Walking Dead Season 3 Ep. 2 “Sick”

Survivor mode was kicked into high gear during last night’s episode, Sick.    In the name of survival Rick’s not-so-merry band were willing to do some pretty nasty things…

In this episode, an act of violence occurred that has the potential to cause a shift in Rick’s character.  In the past two seasons he’s committed horrific acts of violence all in the name of protecting the group, but this was different.  He chose to do this.  He told Lori what he was going to do, and he went and did it.

You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.

What does this mean for his character?  Nothing. Everything.  He’s evolving and becoming what this harsh landscape requires him to be.  He’s still the good guy, the protagonist, the father, the everyman, but he’s more now.  He is a killer.  He is predatory and territorial.  He is an Alpha amongst a group of betas.  He is in a position where the others look to him to make— not the right choice, but rather the hard choice, which they can’t convince their soul to allow them to make.

Shakespeare’s MacBeth addressed the weight that an act of this nature has on the soul, and what it can lead to for the perpetrator.  Generally in literature an act of premeditated murder leads to the utter destruction of the man or woman who commits it.  Stories need balance.  Wrongs need to be righted.  Villains need to pay the price for their evils.  Through suffering and perseverance characters will reach some form of promised land where everything will be all right.  Right?

Not in the Walking Dead.  Why? Because there is no end in sight.  They have a little hope now.  They think the prison, while it’s not quite salvation, might serve as a safe haven for a time.  Maybe they’ll be all right for a bit.

Nah.  Who am I kidding. Let’s be realistic.  They’re all dead at some point.  It’s just a matter of time, and that my friends is what’s so great about this show.  There is no end in sight.  One by one the characters will need to realize this and embrace their inner Darwinian and either change or die.

Looking forward to Ep. 4 “Walk with Me” premiering on Oct. 28th, 2012 on AMC.
