Favorite Scenes: Punch Drunk Love

August 3, 2010

In the film Punch-Drunk Love, Barry is a soft-spoken loser. He represents the opposite of ‘Manning up.’ Until this exact moment, he never seized the moment. In this scene, with a kiss, he changes his life.

After completely wussing out and not going in for a goodnight kiss Barry leaves as he says “Bye bye” the way a child would.

Prodding: "Is your name Barry?" "Yes." "This is for you."

On his way out the front door, a woman gives him the front desk phone. On the phone Lena, tells him she enjoyed their date, and that she wanted to kiss him just then. With that bit of prodding, he runs back upstairs.

But he can’t remember where Lena’s apartment is!

Everything looks the same!

Found it! Hopefully Barry will live happily ever after.

This is a moment of change. To quote another Paul Thomas Anderson film, “This is something that happens.” Barry is in love, and it is one of my favorite scenes.

As an added bonus, we discovered that Adam Sandler can act really well when he wants to!

Thanks for the visit. I’m a little new at the whole blog thing too. Adam Sandler is fun, but I particularly enjoyed this darker side to him. Punch Drunk is an amazing film. I’ll stop by your blog and check it out soon!
